Citrus Foods

What are the benefits of eating citrus foods? The very first thing that you may think of is Vitamin C, which is correct but there are other benefits that aren't as widely known. or discussed about citrus. Below I will list some nutrients and health benefits associated with citrus foods, as well as examples of these foods.


1. Vitamin C: Used to for blood vessels, cartilage, muscle and collagen in bones. Vitamin C also helps protect your body from the harm of free radicals. Vitamin C also helps aid in the absorption of Iron in the gut. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin so that means we have to replenish our recommended intake every day to receive the benefits.


2. Folate: Used for red blood cell formation, cell growth, and also metabolism. Folate is also extremely important in women of child bearing age, whether you plan to have children or not because it significantly reduces the risk of birth defects of a baby's brain and spine. Folate is also a water soluble vitamin that needs to be replenished every day.


3. Lycopene: Found in tomatoes. It is a phyto-chemical that has been found to be protective against prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease.


4. Potassium: Has a huge role in maintaining your heartbeat, maintaining water balance, and cell integrity. Eating a diet that includes potassium rich sources can also help lower blood pressure.

Tomatoes
